Knowing Which Students Need Our Help

May 15, 2014

Project Success Factilitator Harleigh Gabrielson reflected on our mission of serving each student in every school as a guest blogger on the YEP – Twin Cities blog, “Extra Credit,”  with a piece titled, “How Do We KNOW Which Students Need Our Help?”

YEP, or Young Education Professionals, is a nonpartisan organization, created by and for young professionals, that connects tomorrow’s education leaders through relationship-building, knowledge development, career and professional development, and community engagement.

Often we are asked various forms of this question: How do you target, or select, the students you work with? What specific populations do you serve? Is time and money being wasted because we don’t specifically target those most in need?

We at Project Success have worked to serve students and families no matter their economic backgrounds for the past 22 years, and we see the benefits in workshops when students answer questions about themselves and their dreams, and share that insight with one another. We also see the benefits in our theater experiences, when students and families from all backgrounds share access to world-class Twin Cities professional theater along with the community as a whole.

Harleigh says, “differentiation is invaluable to students, yet so is offering equal exploration and opportunities for students”…”giving kids the space to stretch in ways we may not even imagine opens up our own imagination, and kids’, to what is possible.”
