Men On Boats

A rollicking adventure that challenges traditional gender and cultural assumptions. With a gender-bent cast portraying the male explorers of John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition down the Colorado River, the play offers a fresh perspective on the American West and the nature of adventure itself. With humor, heart, and a thrilling narrative, “Men on Boats” uses unconventional storytelling to create a thrilling theatrical experience.

Playwright Jaclyn Backhaus

  • The characters go on an incredibly difficult journey, and have to persevere to make it through. When is a time you have persevered through a hard time?
  • Not every character sticks with John Wesley Powell on the journey. Some decide it is wiser to go a different direction, or to leave the journey entirely. How do you decide when to stick with something, such as a goal or a friendship or hobby? How do you know if it is better to move on from it?
