The Taming
Tweetering, panda shrews, and undying giddiness for James Madison – what else could you expect to find at a Miss America pageant? In this hilarious, raucous, all-female “power-play” inspired by Shakespeare‘s Shrew, contestant Katherine has political aspirations to match her beauty pageant ambitions. All she needs to revolutionize the American government is the help of one senator‘s aide on the cusp of a career breakthrough, and one bleeding-heart liberal blogger who will do anything for her cause. Well, that and a semi-historically-accurate ether trip.
Here‘s lookin‘ at you, America.
Content Warnings/Age Recommendations
Contains some mature language and humor, flashing lights and fog. This performance is recommended for ages 13 and older with parent/guardian discretion.
Themes
The main character, Katherine, aims to 1) win the Miss America pageant and 2) reimagine the constitutional foundations of the country. This goal includes bringing two ideological opposites into the same room (whether they want to be or not). This is a comedy and purposely tells an over-the-top story, but speaks to real questions about our direction as a country. Do you think Katherine will reach her goals in this play? Why or why not?
