Project Success Students Explore Their Post-Secondary Options Within PS College Tours!

Students Touring a College Campus during MEA week

“I learned that there are many people and programs willing to help you succeed [in college].” — Hani, Project Success Student

The leaves were warm-hued, and the sun was shining as nearly 150 students piled into school buses at the Project Success building during MEA week. High Schoolers from numerous partner schools excitedly went throughout the Twin Cities and even out of state to Wisconsin to attend one or several free PS college tours to explore their post-secondary options. During each of the eight college tours (see below for specific schools), students explored college campuses and dorm rooms and talked with admission persons, and current students. and participated in Project Success college workshops covering topics from financial aid to college applications. As they explored this next chapter in life, the students were surrounded by their peers and led by familiar PS Staff, making them feel safe and supported on each tour.

After their college tour experience, many students shared that they felt more confident in themselves and the college options available to them. When asked what obstacles they felt like they overcame during the college tours, students said they conquered “doubts they weren’t good enough,” their “fear of asking [for] help,” and “the fear of being lonely in college.”

Every Project Success college tour is free for MPS students. This Project Success experience includes free transportation to and from each college, a paid lunch and snacks during the tour, and other accessibility requests as needed. Nabil, our Project Success College, and Career Tours manager, had this to say about organizing this year’s college tours: “When planning the college tours, it was important for us to provide an opportunity for students to experience a variety of schools. We visited a mix of private and public schools, two and four-year schools, and schools both in and out of the twin cities.”

Lucy’s Experience

Lucy, a junior in high school, is already pursuing college courses at the University of Minnesota. She has a taste of the college experience. However, she is eager to take the next step in her post-secondary journey. This includes touring prospective universities. Her first official college tour was with Project Success at Hamline University. She shared that a highlight of hers was “going to the college buildings, seeing the actual classrooms, and going to the dorm rooms [she’d] live in. And, kind of being immersed in the whole college campus experience.”
