A witty and suspenseful comedy thriller in the grand tradition of Dial M for Murder and Columbo.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s original mystery, The Butler Did It, takes audiences to a school for butlers that serves the fabulously rich, where a perfect murder has just been committed. The butler did it… but which butler? How? Why? And will the culprit get away with it when an unassuming detective named Inspector Denise is on the case?

Themes

• Some butler training includes adopting the mindset that you need to set your personal humanity aside while you’re at work. Some believe that personal emotions have no place in the workplace. Do you think this is true of other fields of work? If so, what is one example that comes to mind?

• Being a successful butler requires close attention to detail, and sometimes it may be hard to understand why that level of detail is necessary. This is true for many jobs, and maybe even in your work as a student. How might we motivate ourselves to maintain strict attention to detail, especially in the moments that we don’t enjoy it?

Additional Media

It may not be common knowledge that there are schools that teach the skills to be a professional butler. Since this play is a murder mystery set in such a school, you might like to know more about that environment in advance. Below are two options. The first video is pretty short and gives a general overview of the training that some receive. The second video is about a half hour, but it is entertaining and informative. Whichever video you choose (if not both), try to imagine how a murder mystery could be written in this setting. Then at the show, see how much of your vision is reflected in the show!
