The Creative Business of Cake Decorating at Project Success

Even when class is not in session, Project Success alumni find a way to give back to current students by sharing their own paths and expertise, and one recent alumni had subject-matter expertise in something that students can’t resist – cake!

16 high school students joined Alicia Glover, a PS Alum, and the Project Success team to learn not only about cake decorating, but entrepreneurship and what it takes to run your own business. As frosting was being spread and cakes were taking shape, students rolled up their sleeves and learned about Alicia’s journey in starting her own cake business, Demi Taste Good Treats.
Cake decorating has many fundamentals, and while students planned their own cake designs and learned how to make and dye buttercream frosting, a PS Facilitator, Nora, helped students generate questions for Alicia about her career path. Under Alicia’s guidance, students brought their ideas to life. Her cheerful energy inspired students to build both practical cake decorating skills, as well as their confidence through this new art medium.
The sweet day of learning wrapped up with students admiring each other’s finished creations, enjoying some cupcakes, and celebrating a fun and memorable learning experience. Daylong workshops like this are just one of the many ways that Project Success offers engaging, hands-on programming for students on non-school days. Creating opportunities for them to learn new skills, connect with a PS alum, and discover new possibilities for their futures.
