From Minnesota to the Amazon

On April 21, students, families and MPS staff met with Oliver Utne, founder of the non-profit Fundación Kara Solar, and virtually travelled to the Achuar territory of the Amazon, learned about the Achuar people who live there, and discussed the importance that this rainforest has on our global community.

Kara Solar’s mission is to co-create projects with indigenous peoples, building solar-powered shuttle boats in the Amazon and offering an alternative to further roadbuilding. Roads are the leading driver of deforestation worldwide. If current trends continue, 40% of Amazonian forests will be lost by 2050.

Thank you for joining us for this presentation where Oliver highlighted the work with the Achuar people and shared stories of finding his path from Minnesota to the Amazon!
