SUMMARY:Paul Taylor Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:The vigorous program showcases three contrasting works that explore the complexities of the human condition through Paul Taylor’s signature theatricality. It opens with the physically demanding dynamic geometry of Taylor’s “Brandenburgs” (Opus 88\, 1988)\, an exuberant\, gallant piece set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3 and 6. \nFollowing “Brandenburgs” is a sensational new work by critically acclaimed choreographer Pam Tanowitz\, “Messengers\, Maidens and the End of Something Else\,” danced to Franz Schubert’s haunting “Death and the Maiden\,” with sets and costumes by visual artist Sarah Crowner. \nIn a somber shift\, the evening concludes with the company premiere of resident choreographer Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent” (2007). The piece’s mechanical\, ritualistic movement is intensified with “Ogelala” (Ballettmysterium) Op. 53 by Erwin Schulhoff\, a Jewish composer whose work was banned in Nazi Germany. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\nIn Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent\,” they explore connections between the experiences of people from different cultures. DESCRIPTION:A powerful story of connection \nIn post-apartheid South Africa\, Lunga Kunene\, a no-nonsense\, Black caregiver with little patience for privilege or hubris\, finds himself providing in-home care for Jack Morris\, a celebrated (and stubborn) white actor facing a life-changing diagnosis as he rehearses for the title role in King Lear. The two men are different in every way — race\, class and politics\, to start — yet they find unexpected common ground in the words of Shakespeare. They will also get to visit a few departments on the West Bank campus. Students will choose between two areas on the West Bank: \n\nVisit the Carlson School of Management and speak to faculty and students about the many areas of study including accounting\, business\, finance\, marketing\, management & entrepreneurship.\nExplore the Department of Arts\, Theater Arts & Dance touring areas of study in both the Regis and Rarig Center buildings. These buildings include drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, sculpture\, ceramics\, photography\, theater\, dance and more!\n\nUniversity of Wisconsin- Eau Claire 8:30 am – 5:00 pm\nThe University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire offers a unique blend of hands-on learning and vibrant campus life in one of Wisconsin’s most scenic college towns. Known for strong undergraduate research\, top-ranked study abroad programs\, and 200+ student organizations—including the largest marching band in the Midwest—UWEC gives students big opportunities in a supportive environment. Located along the Chippewa River\, Eau Claire is a creative\, outdoorsy city full of music\, art\, trails\, and festivals\, making it a great place to learn and live. \nSaint Paul College: 8:30 am – 2:30 pm\nSaint Paul College\, located in downtown St. Paul\, offers over 100 hands-on programs in areas like automotive tech\, welding\, healthcare\, and IT—perfect for students who want to jump into real-world careers. High schoolers can get a head start with free PSEO classes or explore hands-on summer camps in trades\, tech\, and more. The campus is surrounded by city parks\, cafes\, and public transit\, giving students easy access to both practical learning and the vibrant life of the Twin Cities. \nStudents will have the option to choose between two different tracks of career pathways: \n\nTrack A will visit “Trades” including areas such as carpentry\, plumbing\, welding and automotive technician programs. After lunch\, they will travel to Turbo Tim’s Auto Shop to check out career paths in the automotive repair industry.\nTrack B will see areas including cosmetology\, culinary arts\, and nursing/healthcare programs. After lunch\, they will visit an onsite location to meet with professionals in healthcare/hospitality careers.
