SUMMARY:Paul Taylor Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this performance is currently waitlist only. \nThe vigorous program showcases three contrasting works that explore the complexities of the human condition through Paul Taylor’s signature theatricality. It opens with the physically demanding dynamic geometry of Taylor’s “Brandenburgs” (Opus 88\, 1988)\, an exuberant\, gallant piece set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3 and 6. \nFollowing “Brandenburgs” is a sensational new work by critically acclaimed choreographer Pam Tanowitz\, “Messengers\, Maidens and the End of Something Else\,” danced to Franz Schubert’s haunting “Death and the Maiden\,” with sets and costumes by visual artist Sarah Crowner. \nIn a somber shift\, the evening concludes with the company premiere of resident choreographer Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent” (2007). The piece’s mechanical\, ritualistic movement is intensified with “Ogelala” (Ballettmysterium) Op. 53 by Erwin Schulhoff\, a Jewish composer whose work was banned in Nazi Germany. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\nIn Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent\,” they explore connections between the experiences of people from different cultures. This work is informed by deep respect\, self-knowledge\, and empathy. Have you ever noticed similarities between your personal experience and someone else’s? How do you think that respect\, self-knowledge and/or empathy can help you to connect with someone else? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. When registering with us\, please let us know what accommodations you need and we will follow up with you! \nTransportation\nIf you do not have access to a ride\, call Project Success and we can provide transportation for you. Please let us know if you need a ride when you make your reservation. We will need at least 2 days’ notice to set up transportation. \nChildcare\nChildcare is available for this performance. Please let us know if you need childcare when you make your reservation.

SUMMARY:Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this performance is currently waitlist only. \nAlvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Northrop with more dance The New York Times calls “transfixing\, pulsating and galvanizing.” Embarking on its next era under the leadership of new Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack\, the company remains guided as ever by Alvin Ailey’s pioneering legacy — continuing to push the bounds of what the human body can do and what the human spirit can achieve. Audiences will be treated to different programming each night\, including some classic favorites alongside several new works by contemporary choreographers that promise to propel dance in exciting new directions. Both programs culminate with Ailey’s ultimate anthem to resilience and joy\, “Revelations.” \nThe Saturday\, April 18 performance includes “Jazz Island” (2025) by Maija García\, “Difference Between” (2025) by Mathew Neenan and “Song of the Anchorite” (2025) by Jamar Roberts. \nThe Sunday\, April 19 features “The Holy Blues” (2025) by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar\, Samantha Figgins and Chalvar Monteiro\, “Blink of an Eye” (2025) by Medhi Walerski and “A Case of You” (2004) by Judith Jamison. \nBoth performances will conclude with the touchstone of inspiration\, “Revelations” (1960). More than just a popular dance work\, “Revelations” has become a cultural treasure. Performed to African American spirituals\, song-sermons\, gospel songs and holy blues\, Alvin Ailey’s “Revelations” fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. This enduring classic is born out of the choreographer’s “blood memories” of his childhood in rural Texas and the Baptist Church. Since its premiere in 1960\, the ballet has been performed continuously around the globe\, crossing barriers of faith and nationality\, making it the most widely-seen modern dance work in the world. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\n\nThis performance is a blend of newer work and classic work from decades ago. What similarities and differences do you imagine there will be between the newer and older dances?\n“Revelations” is a deeply personal work by founder Alvin Ailey\, reflecting on his childhood memories. If you were to create a personal work of art inspired by your life\, what art form(s) would you use? What would the work be called?\n\nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. SUMMARY:The Cameraman: Silent Film With Live Music
DESCRIPTION:A classic silent film from 1928\, The Cameraman is considered one of slapstick comedian Buster Keaton’s best. The romantic comedy follows a simple photographer who dreams of capturing video for the news\, but continually finds himself in various wrong places at the wrong times. The zany action on screen will be accompanied live by organist Aaron David Miller\, a maestro on the historic Northrop Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. The soundtrack will be improvised during the film—just as was done in early 20th century theaters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvisory: This 1928 film contains negative depictions of people or cultures.  \nPre-Show Teacher Appreciation Event at 2pm  \nInterested in connecting before the show? SUMMARY:Sun Dogs: Filmmaker and Composer Pairings With Alarm Will Sound
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Alarm Will Sound; composers Devonté Hynes\, Arooj Aftab\, Daniel Wohl and Rafiq Bhatia; and filmmakers Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Josephine Decker\, Mati Diop\, and Manon Lutanie  \nAn ongoing Liquid Music series\, Sun Dogs brings together inspired composer and filmmaker pairs to create short-format films with new music for live orchestra\, exploring how stories can be told (both musically and visually) from equal footing. These singular films are accompanied by the “unusually versatile\, reliably exhilarating new-music ensemble” (The New York Times) Alarm Will Sound\, with newly-arranged scores for the group. An atmospheric phenomenon created by refracted light\, a sun dog is striking proof that\, when natural conditions are right\, familiar elements can shift the way we see the world. The series’ prismatic collaborations similarly allow us glimpses at another realm.  \nProgram:\nNorthrop-commissioned prelude for organ\, electronics\, and sampled vocals by Daniel Wohl\nOn Blue by composer Rafiq Bhatia and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul\nNaked Blue by composer Devonté Hynes and filmmakers Mati Diop and Manon Lutanie\nRise\, Again by co-composers Daniel Wohl and Arooj Aftab and filmmaker Josephine Decker  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nNorthrop Auditorium \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 14 and older. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this show\, the musicians and filmmakers play an equal role in telling their stories.
