BWCA Adventures 2013: 7 Days, 165 Kids, and Lots of Fun!
During the month of June 2013, Project SUCCESS brought 165 students from each of the 9 middle schools we serve to spend 7 days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Originally planned for 21 groups and 147 students, the demand was so high we added three more groups! In the BWCA, everything students learn and practice in their Project SUCCESS monthly workshops is condensed into a week-long experience. They develop confidence and skills, build relationships, and respect for the beauty of the wilderness and a simple way of life.
For some, this is their first time out of the city. Each group was led by a Project SUCCESS staff member or volunteer and a Wilderness Canoe Base guide. Of the 15 volunteer leaders, 9 of them were Project SUCCESS alumni and 2 were teachers! Many thanks to our volunteers and to Emma Harness and Wilderness Canoe Base for helping to accomodate the largest Project SUCCESS BWCA turnout ever! And thank you to The Minneapolis Foundation, the Marbrook Foundation, the James B. Linsmayer Foundation, Blue Zones and the many individual donors who contributed to the scholarship fund which helps cover participation fees for 81% of the young people who come.
