Back to Boston: Project Success Returns to BU and Harvard for a 5th Consecutive Year

November 11, 2019

This month, as part of our global expeditions, Project Success will return to Boston University (BU) and Harvard University for the fifth consecutive year. 50 students from 9 Minneapolis high schools will travel to Boston in mid-November, marking our largest Project Success global experience to date.

Since our initial Boston trip in fall 2015, global expeditions have grown to become an integral part of Project Success’ core programming. Through all types of Project Success expeditions, students see a part of the world they have never seen before, or see something familiar in a new way, building confidence and opening doors for their futures. Many students traveling to Boston are English Learners or new Americans, and all have an interest in global education and leadership. Over the course of five years, nearly 200 students have experienced this meaningful trip.

In addition to touring the campuses of BU and Harvard, they will hear from multicultural student panels and meet individually with Minneapolis Public Schools Project Success alumni who attend college in Boston. A highlight from past years, students will again meet with Harvard professor Fernando Reimers, a leader in the field of global education, and students from his graduate classes.

Throughout the trip, students will participate in Project Success curriculum which encourages them to reflect on, and plan for, their own unique post-secondary goals. For some, that goal might include an Ivy League education — one of the 2018 Boston trip attendees, Yusuf, is in his first year at Harvard now. He reflected after his trip, “The most important thing I experienced on this trip was seeing students of color who go to Harvard.”

For other students, it might be their first time setting foot on a college campus or having the opportunity to ask questions of current students. Paired with Project Success workshops, these experiences help students explore their own dreams and how college might play a part in getting them there.

Most global expeditions are offered at no cost to students and families. Airfare, meals, transportation and lodging are covered by Project Success. Donations make trips like our Boston global expedition possible — and one global expedition can be life-changing for a student. For Amina, who attended the 2017 Boston expedition, it turned her dreams into reality: “Students may not be able to afford to visit colleges, or we may not have parents or adults around us that know how to navigate the college application process,” Amina said. “Project Success helps us with both. I believe this program has helped many students to make the dream of attending college a reality.Read more from Amina in her blog post.
