Students Spend Spring Break Visiting Chicago Colleges

April 13, 2015

Over Spring Break from March 30 to April 2, students from all seven core Minneapolis Public High Schools participated in Project Success college tours traveling to Madison, WI and Chicago, IL. During the trip, students had the opportunity to visit ten different colleges and universities, and participate in walking tours, admissions presentations, student panels, other special programming, and more!

Project Success believes it is important for all prospective students to visit and explore the area around their potential schools in order to determine whether or not that area is the right fit. While in Chicago, students explored the “Pilsen” and “Wicker Park” Neighborhoods. During these neighborhood visits, students participated in scavenger hunts, which gave them a fun and loosely organized way to independently explore and familiarize themselves with areas unique to Chicago. It was a blast!

Throughout the trip, each student participated in unique Project Success workshops and activities. These workshops guide students to discover, think critically, refine their post-secondary plans, and generally get the most out of their college visits. With the aid of these workshops and other Project Success programming in and outside their classrooms, 67% of Minneapolis Public School students who attend Project Success college tours are more likely to graduate on time.

Some of the feedback we received from students included:

  • “I saw colleges in real life which was extremely helpful.”
  • “College is like a new pair of shoes, you have to find the best fit.
  • “I learned more about what I like in colleges and found some I would seriously consider applying to. I also found out more details about the application process.”
  • “I learned exactly what I like in a college.”
  • “The trip really got me to start thinking about college and made me more excited.”
  • “I gained motivation to be more invested in what I’m interested in, so I can continue with it in college, and it also helped me to stay motivated to stay in school so I can get into the schools I want.”
  • “I learned more about college life and what being a student is really like.”

The Spring Break college tours concluded another incredible year of Project Success college tours that saw more than 650 students visit more than 36 college and university campuses! We are all thrilled to have helped so many students with their college search process, and look forward to tours beginning again in the fall of 2015!
