“Little Shop of AMAZING” at Marcy Open

March 23, 2015

During the month of March 2015, More than 90 of Marcy Open School’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade actors and technicians inspired and entertained audiences with six performances of the musical Little Shop of Horrors, a story about desire for fame and success – and what happens when those desires go too far. Students began rehearsals in January and rehearsed every day – acting, dancing and singing – for eight weeks with professional artists and quality sound, lighting, sets and costumes.

Working hand-in-hand with students at Marcy Open School, Project Success has produced yearly school musicals since 2009, including: You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Once On This Island, I Am, Seussical, and most recently Into the Woods in 2014.

For each of the six performances, parents, teachers, students, district leaders and community members packed the house for sold out shows and were left inspired, entertained, and impressed by the talents and efforts put forth by each performer and crew member.

In a recent e-mail entitled “Little Shop of AMAZING,” a parent of one of the performers said,

“It was evident that everyone had worked so hard: kids and staff.  My daughter had such fun being in the musical.  We were so proud to see her natural talents blossom and see her smiling from ear to ear while she was on stage….The choreography was so well planned and executed.  It was so clear that the students had been well taught and trained. That many kids in such a small space singing and dancing together is nothing short of a miracle!…Kudos to all of you for the thousand things each of you do behind the scenes to make the Marcy Musical so wonderful.”

This one-on-one contact between local artist educators and students, and the experience of the musical performance itself, is one of the key ways in which Project Success helps students build confidence, gain new experiences, and learn more about themselves and each other through the power of theater.

Congratulations and thank you to the cast, crew, parents, teachers and other supportive adults who helped to make this production nothing short of AMAZING!
