Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Northrop with more dance The New York Times calls \u201ctransfixing, pulsating and galvanizing.\u201d Embarking on its next era under the leadership of new Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack, the company remains guided as ever by Alvin Ailey\u2019s pioneering legacy \u2014 continuing to push the bounds of what the human body can do and what the human spirit can achieve. Audiences will be treated to different programming each night, including some classic favorites alongside several new works by contemporary choreographers that promise to propel dance in exciting new directions. Both programs culminate with Ailey\u2019s ultimate anthem to resilience and joy, \u201cRevelations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u202f<\/span>Saturday, April 18<\/span><\/b>\u202fperformance includes \u201c<\/span>Jazz Island<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2025) by Maija Garc\u00eda, \u201c<\/span>Difference Between<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2025) by Mathew Neenan and \u201c<\/span>Song of the Anchorite<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2025) by Jamar Roberts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sunday, April 19<\/span><\/b>\u202ffeatures \u201c<\/span>The Holy Blues<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2025) by\u00a0Jawole\u00a0Willa Jo Zollar, Samantha\u00a0Figgins\u00a0and\u00a0Chalvar\u00a0Monteiro, \u201c<\/span>Blink of an Eye<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2025) by Medhi\u00a0Walerski\u00a0and \u201c<\/span>A Case of You<\/span><\/a>\u201d (2004) by Judith Jamison.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both performances<\/span><\/b>\u202fwill conclude with the touchstone of inspiration, “<\/span>Revelations<\/span><\/a>” (1960). More than just a popular dance work, \u201cRevelations\u201d has become a cultural treasure. Performed to African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Alvin Ailey\u2019s \u201cRevelations\u201d fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. This enduring classic is born out of the choreographer’s “blood memories” of his childhood in rural Texas and the Baptist Church. Since its premiere in 1960,\u00a0the ballet\u00a0has been performed continuously around the globe, crossing barriers of faith and nationality, making it the most\u00a0widely-seen\u00a0modern dance work in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n
