SUMMARY:A Christmas Carol
DESCRIPTION:A miserly and miserable man\, Ebenezer Scrooge greets each Christmas with “Bah! Humbug!” until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past\, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. In Charles Dickens’ beloved classic\, the three spirits show Scrooge happy memories from his past\, difficult realities from the present and a grim future should he continue his closed-hearted ways. Throughout his journey\, Scrooge is forced to reckon with the man he has become and contemplate the man he could be — but only if his restless night leads to a change of heart by morning. The Guthrie’s cherished tradition celebrates its 50th year and continues to delight audiences of all ages this holiday season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nGuthrie Theater \nAll Performance Dates\nSunday\, November 10\, 7:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nTuesday\, November 12\, 7:30 pm\nWednesday\, November 13\, 7:30 pm\nSunday\, November 17\, 1:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nSunday\, November 24\, 7:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nTuesday\, November 26\, 7:30pm (currently waitlist only)\nSunday\, December 1\, 7:00 pm (This is a relaxed/sensory friendly performance. SUMMARY:Choreographers' Evening
DESCRIPTION:“Dance that inspires\, challenges\, and entertains . . . from a variety of Minnesota choreographers and companies.” —Star Tribune  \nNow in its 52nd year\, this annual dance showcase celebrates Minnesota’s vibrant and diverse dance community. Powerful performances by a roster of local choreographers and movement artists will draw from Audre Lorde’s writing on the necessity of creative practice. The intention comes from this year’s curator jess pretty\, returning to the Walker following her 2019 appearance in Claudia Rankine and Will Rawl’s What Remains. Through Lorde’s writing\, the performers will reflect on art-making as a means of tending to the self and to others.  \n“I am grateful for the invitation to curate the 52nd annual Choreographers’ Evening at the Walker. I am moved by work that considers pleasure\, joy\, memory\, archive\, liberation\, risk\, vulnerability\, reorientation\, and transformation.”  \n—jess pretty  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nWalker Art Center \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nMay contain mature themes or imagery. SUMMARY:Sun Dogs: Filmmaker and Composer Pairings With Alarm Will Sound
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Alarm Will Sound; composers Devonté Hynes\, Arooj Aftab\, Daniel Wohl and Rafiq Bhatia; and filmmakers Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Josephine Decker\, Mati Diop\, and Manon Lutanie  \nAn ongoing Liquid Music series\, Sun Dogs brings together inspired composer and filmmaker pairs to create short-format films with new music for live orchestra\, exploring how stories can be told (both musically and visually) from equal footing. These singular films are accompanied by the “unusually versatile\, reliably exhilarating new-music ensemble” (The New York Times) Alarm Will Sound\, with newly-arranged scores for the group. An atmospheric phenomenon created by refracted light\, a sun dog is striking proof that\, when natural conditions are right\, familiar elements can shift the way we see the world. The series’ prismatic collaborations similarly allow us glimpses at another realm.  \nProgram:\nNorthrop-commissioned prelude for organ\, electronics\, and sampled vocals by Daniel Wohl\nOn Blue by composer Rafiq Bhatia and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul\nNaked Blue by composer Devonté Hynes and filmmakers Mati Diop and Manon Lutanie\nRise\, Again by co-composers Daniel Wohl and Arooj Aftab and filmmaker Josephine Decker  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nNorthrop Auditorium \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 14 and older. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this show\, the musicians and filmmakers play an equal role in telling their stories. The Guthrie’s cherished tradition celebrates its 50th year and continues to delight audiences of all ages this holiday season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nGuthrie Theater \nAll Performance Dates\nSunday\, November 10\, 7:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nTuesday\, November 12\, 7:30 pm (currently waitlist only)\nWednesday\, November 13\, 7:30 pm\nSunday\, November 17\, 1:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nSunday\, November 24\, 7:00 pm (currently waitlist only)\nTuesday\, November 26\, 7:30pm (currently waitlist only)\nSunday\, December 1\, 7:00 pm (This is a relaxed/sensory friendly performance. SUMMARY:Threads Dance Project - Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Threads Dance Project’s Fall season performance excavates how our notions and impressions about each other and the world inform our sense of space\, place\, and knowing. Artistic Director Karen L. Charles continues to explore how movement can spark a new abolitionist movement with the premiere of Part 2 of its Abolition in Evolution triptych – Shoes; additionally\, Objet de Desir Inaccessible which premiered at Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) in 2019 will be reimagined for the stage.    \nShoes is an allegory using feet and the shoes that adorn them to represent journey\, judgment\, and individuality. “Our gait can reveal us to be buoyant or bullish\, dispirited or steadfast” (Cicely Tyson). What if we could walk uniquely yet together towards Utopia?   \nObjet de Désir Inaccessible (Unattainable Object of Desire) features Charles’ interpretation of the renowned painting Portrait of Madeleine (formerly titled Portrait of a Negress) utilizing research about the artist (Marie-Guillemine Benoist)\, her subject\, and their relationship to explore racism\, feminism\, identity and concepts of beauty.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformance Venue\nLuminary Arts Center \nAll Performance Dates\nFriday\, Nov 8 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, Nov 9 at 2pm \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis production includes projected imagery of Objet de Désir Inaccessible by Marie-Guillemine Benoist\, which features partial nudity. This is recommended for ages 14 and older\, or younger with parent/guardian discretion. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir dance piece Shoes explores how we express ourselves through our daily movements. How might your style of movement be interpreted by others? Do you think their interpretations might match how you perceive yourself?\nTheir dance piece Objet de Désir Inaccessible (Unattainable Object of Desire) responds to a painting created in France\, in a very different time period. What is a work of art (from any medium) that you would like to respond to? SUMMARY:Ragamala Dance Company: Children of Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Described as “soulful\, imaginative\, and rhythmically contagious” by The New York Times\, Ragamala Dance Company presents the world premiere of Children of Dharma\, a Northrop Centennial Commission. In this seamless blend of mesmerizing Bharatanatyam choreography\, original music\, and lush visuals\, creators Aparna\, Ranee\, and Ashwini Ramaswamy take inspiration from Keerthik Sashidharan’s novel The Dharma Forest—a re-envisioning of the Indian/global epic The Mahabharata.\n\nThe rippling effects of dharma\, or “right action\,” are revealed wordlessly through the body. Featuring scenic and light design by famed French artist Willy Cessa\, Children of Dharma illustrates the emotional\, moral\, and physical consequences exacted on and outside an epic battlefield. \n“Dharma is unseen despite its presence everywhere. Like the fidelity of a shadow which vanishes but never leaves us\, like a forgotten old love that shaped us into who we are\, like a forest that nourishes all who live within without asking anything in return.”—Keerthik Sasidharan \nPerformance Venue\nNorthrop Auditorium \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nContains mature themes such as war. This performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne meaning of “dharma” is doing the right thing. When might it be easy to do the right thing? When might it be hard to do the right thing?\nSometimes we want to do the right thing\, but it isn’t clear what the “right” thing is. SUMMARY:All the Devils Are Here: How Shakespeare Invented the Villain
DESCRIPTION:Note: The 10/23 performance is currently waitlist only. \nAn artful exploration of evil \nShakespeare’s greatest villains — Richard III\, Lady Macbeth\, Claudius and more — have captivated and tormented audiences for centuries. After decades of embodying the likes of Hades\, Scar and the Green Goblin\, acclaimed actor Patrick Page continues to be drawn to the layered motivations and complex psyches of these infamous evildoers. In this chilling and compelling solo show\, Page sheds the skin of one character as he jumps into the next while exploring how each villain is a window into the depths of the human heart. He concludes by prompting the audience with an even darker reflection: to confront and accept the trappings of evil inside us all.  \nThree things to know  \nAll the Devils Are Here became the second-highest rated show in New York City (after Hamilton) during its 2023 off-Broadway run\, which was extended multiple times due to popular demand.  \nPatrick Page has embodied numerous villains in his illustrious career\, including Hades in Hadestown\, the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark\, Scar in The Lion King\, the Grinch in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and more.  \nAfter every show\, Page has a conversation with the audience to unpack the play and discuss what they’ve learned\, almost as if the audience is his acting partner. \nPerformance Venue\nGuthrie Theater \n\n\nAll Performance Dates\nSunday\, 10/20\, 7pm\nWednesday\, 10/23\, 7:30pm\nSunday\, 10/27\, 7pm\n \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 14 and older. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis show invites us to consider how stage villains can reflect aspects of ourselves. Is there a character you enjoy or identify with that is viewed as a villain? If so\, what is it about the character that connects with you? And do you agree that this character is in fact a villain? \nActor Patrick Page delves deeply into a series of characters all created by the same author. Who is another author (or creator in general) whose work you’d like to see explored like this?\n\nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options.
