SUMMARY:Paul Taylor Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:The vigorous program showcases three contrasting works that explore the complexities of the human condition through Paul Taylor’s signature theatricality. It opens with the physically demanding dynamic geometry of Taylor’s “Brandenburgs” (Opus 88\, 1988)\, an exuberant\, gallant piece set to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 3 and 6. \nFollowing “Brandenburgs” is a sensational new work by critically acclaimed choreographer Pam Tanowitz\, “Messengers\, Maidens and the End of Something Else\,” danced to Franz Schubert’s haunting “Death and the Maiden\,” with sets and costumes by visual artist Sarah Crowner. \nIn a somber shift\, the evening concludes with the company premiere of resident choreographer Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent” (2007). The piece’s mechanical\, ritualistic movement is intensified with “Ogelala” (Ballettmysterium) Op. 53 by Erwin Schulhoff\, a Jewish composer whose work was banned in Nazi Germany. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\nIn Robert Battle’s “No Longer Silent\,” they explore connections between the experiences of people from different cultures. This work is informed by deep respect\, self-knowledge\, and empathy. Have you ever noticed similarities between your personal experience and someone else’s? How do you think that respect\, self-knowledge and/or empathy can help you to connect with someone else? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. When registering with us\, please let us know what accommodations you need and we will follow up with you! \nTransportation\nIf you do not have access to a ride\, call Project Success and we can provide transportation for you. Please let us know if you need a ride when you make your reservation. We will need at least 2 days’ notice to set up transportation. \nChildcare\nChildcare is available for this performance. Please let us know if you need childcare when you make your reservation.

SUMMARY:Indecent
DESCRIPTION:A play about a play—and the artists who risked everything to tell it. Inspired by the true story of Sholem Asch’s seminal Yiddish work\, God of Vengeance\, and its infamous 1923 obscenity trial\, INDECENT is a haunting\, klezmer-infused play with music that traces the turbulent journey of a troupe determined to stage a work deemed “indecent.” As their story unfolds across continents and decades\, so too does a powerful meditation on censorship\, nationalism and the policing of queer love. At once tender and thunderously relevant\, this breathtaking theatrical experience shines a light on the enduring struggle between artistic expression and societal control. In a moment when questions of whose stories are “acceptable” feel increasingly urgent\, INDECENT invites us to bear witness to the courage of artists\, the cost of silence and the unshakable power of theater itself.  \nPlease note: Due to limited ticket numbers\, teachers and students can register for the 9/15 performance\, but the 9/25 performance is reserved for students and family members only. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance contains: \n\nThemes of antisemitism\, censorship and persecution\nDepictions of homophobia and prejudice\, and period-specific discriminatory language\nReferences to and depictions of war\, displacement and the Holocaust\nEmotional grief\, loss and trauma\nTheatrical haze\n\n This experience is recommended for ages 13 and older with parent/guardian discretion. \nThemes\nThis play is about real-life artists who were committed to sharing a radical play with the world\, despite intense backlash and legal consequences. In addition\, they were facing existential threats with the rise of Nazism. Despite all of this\, many of those artists remained committed to the play. What is something that you care deeply about\, whether it be a work of art or something different?  What is something that you would remain committed to\, no matter what? \nAdditional Media\nHere is an interview with playwright Paula Vogel:

SUMMARY:The Great Gatsby
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This performance is currently waitlist only. \nIn this famous Jazz Age story\, Nick Carraway\, a young man from Minnesota\, moves to New York in the summer of 1922. As he navigates the unfamiliar social scene\, he is invited to a lavish party thrown by the mysteriously wealthy Jay Gatsby\, who is trying to rekindle a relationship with Nick’s cousin\, Daisy. This faithful adaptation of the novel uses theatricality to capture the lyric and poetic nature of Fitzgerald’s prose. With themes of greed\, love\, disillusionment\, and inequality\, this Great American Classic feels both mythic and familiar in a new century. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nContains mature themes\, including domestic violence and suicide; gunshots;  simulated smoking; & water-based theatrical fog. This performance is recommended for ages 13 and older with parent/guardian discretion. \nThemes\nMany of the characters in this show (which takes place in 1922) value status\, wealth and appearance\, not knowing that less than a decade later the economy would crash and the country would experience The Great Depression. Values such as status\, wealth and appearance might not have been as helpful once everyone was struggling. At the very least\, those values may have been measured differently than earlier. What is a value that you think would serve you well both in good times and bad times?

SUMMARY:Waiting for Godot
DESCRIPTION:A profound exploration of humanity \nBeneath a lonely tree on a country road\, two companions wait for the mysterious Godot. As time moves along\, Vladimir and Estragon fill their day circling the largest of questions: Why are we here? What are we here for? Who are we to be? Samuel Beckett’s tragicomedy uses wit and poignant dialogue to create an existential world that is both humorous and heartbreaking. Staged at the Guthrie for the first time in over 50 years\, this seminal play explores the human impulses to want more\, to understand why and to keep showing up — even when nothing seems to change.  \nThings to know\n\nWaiting for Godot is considered a landmark theatrical masterpiece for many reasons: The play subtly breaks the fourth wall\, embraces the absurd and pairs philosophy with comedy to explore universal human questions.\nAcademy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner David Strathairn\, best known for his performances in Good Night\, and Good Luck\, The Bourne Ultimatum and Lincoln\, will make his Guthrie debut as Vladimir.\n\nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nContains production effects and mature content\, including moments of staged violence and references to suicidal ideation and slavery. This performance is recommended for ages 14 and older. \nThemes\nThis play presents a world that doesn’t seem to change. What are aspects of our world that you wish would change? What aspects might you want to keep the same? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options.
\nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. SUMMARY:PS Teacher & Staff Appreciation Night at the Guthrie Theater
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Come From Away is currently waitlist only. There are still tickets available for Private Lives. \nPlease join us at the Guthrie Theater for MPS Teacher & Staff Appreciation Night! We have two show options for you to choose from. Descriptions and more information about each show are below. For this event\, teachers can register for up to two tickets per household. \nNew this year!\nBefore the performances\, we will be gathering in Gold Medal Park for a complimentary dinner\, drinks\, and dessert! Seating in Gold Medal Park is limited\, so we encourage you to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to make yourself comfortable while you eat. La Cochinita food truck will be serving food with gluten-free and vegan options available. The truck will be serving food starting at 5:30 pm. \nCome From Away\nA musical inspired by true events \nAt 9:26 a.m. on September 11\, 2001\, the Federal Aviation Administration shuts down U.S. airspace in response to terrorist attacks\, forcing all inbound planes to find alternate destinations. In total\, 38 planes are diverted to Gander\, Newfoundland\, and the hospitable residents of the small Canadian town greet all 7\,000 passengers with food\, clothing and open hearts. By the time the “plane people” depart\, defenses are down\, romance blooms and lifelong friendships are formed. Based on the inspiring true story of Gander’s unexpected guests\, this hopeful musical honors our common humanity and highlights the importance of reaching out to those in need.  \nThree things to know: \n\nThe story follows the real-life timeline of airline passengers stranded in Newfoundland\, Canada\, after 9/11 closed U.S. airspace\, from the moment they land in the small town of Gander until the last plane departs.\nCome From Away deeply resonated with audiences when it premiered on Broadway\, receiving seven Tony Award nominations in 2017\, including Best Musical. \nDirector Kent Gash returns to the Guthrie after directing the musical Guys and Dolls in our 2018–2019 Season. \n\nPrivate Lives\nA quick-witted comedy\nIt’s been five years since divorcees Elyot and Amanda called it quits. It wasn’t that they didn’t adore each other — their union was just too tempestuous for their own good. Now they’re both on marriage number two and honeymooning at a popular resort town in France with their new spouses\, Sibyl and Victor\, who remain unconvinced that the flames between the former dynamic duo have fizzled. When the couples discover they are vacationing at the same hotel\, insults and romantic sparks fly until everyone is caught in the emotional crossfire and forced to follow their hearts. This delicious will-they-won’t-they comedy will have you rooting for the lovers and leave you laughing the whole way home.   \nThree things to know: \n\nThis witty comedy of manners is considered to be Noël Coward’s most famous work\, and it is revived often on London’s West End and beyond. \nPrivate Lives is a Guthrie audience favorite: We previously produced the play in our 1975–1976\, 1992–1993 and 2007–2008 Seasons. \nDirector David Ivers most recently helmed the Guthrie’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest in our 2023–2024 Season.
