SUMMARY:My Name is Florence
DESCRIPTION:Who was Florence Price\, beyond the music? \nProlific American composer Florence Price made history as the first Black woman to have a symphony performed by a major U.S. orchestra. My Name is Florence\, a world premiere from MN Opera’s New Works Initiative\, was inspired by writings and correspondence unearthed in the backyard of her family home.   \nComposed by B.E. Boykin to a libretto by Harrison David Rivers\, the opera presents vignettes from Price’s life that bring into focus the impact of family\, legacy\, and the transformative power of a seat at the piano. With warmth and humor\, My Name is Florence explores the complexities of identity\, generational connection\, and ultimately the power of music to transform. It is a celebration of Price’s enduring legacy in music and a reclamation of the space she occupies within the American musical canon. \nEstimated Run Time: 1 hour 20 minutes\nSung in English with English captions projected above the stage.  \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nContains mature themes including racial discrimination and sexism. Recommended for ages 11 and older.  \nThemes\n\nAs a child\, Florence finds something she truly loves to do: play piano. She describes playing piano as “the feeling of walking barefoot in the grass.” What is something that you love to do? How would you describe how it feels?\nFlorence’s mother believes that racism is so unchangeable that Florence would be more successful and respected by saying that she is Spanish instead of African American. Do you believe that similar issues exist today? Why or why not? \nAs an adult\, Florence works incredibly hard to become a successful music composer. However\, she is frequently ignored or dismissed\, despite the quality of the music. In the face of these frustrations\, she continues creating music\, even if it receives no attention. In your life\, what is something that you would continue to do\, even if no one else saw value in it?  \n\nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. When registering with us\, please let us know what accommodations you need and we will follow up with you!   \nTransportation\nIf you do not have access to a ride\, call Project Success and we can provide transportation for you. Please let us know if you need a ride when you make your reservation. We will need at least 2 days’ notice to set up transportation.   \nAdditional Media\nHere is a brief clip of the composer and librettist talking about the opera:

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:A chilling tale of ambition  \nWhen three witches utter a surprising incantation — “All hail Macbeth\, that shalt be king hereafter” — a soldier and nobleman’s course is forever altered. Macbeth and his ambitious wife seek to kill King Duncan and usurp the throne. The pair is successful\, but their satisfaction is fleeting\, and the two embark on a perilous path of destruction. Macbeth is soon haunted by the bloodstained ghost of a former enemy\, and the crown grows heavy with the weight of his insecurity and paranoia. SUMMARY:The Glass Menagerie
DESCRIPTION:The Glass Menagerie is a luminous memory play that captures the fragile ache of longing\, illusion\, and family ties strained to their breaking point. Filtered through Tom’s introspective narration\, the story unfolds like a faded home movie—its details soft\, its emotions piercing. Tennessee Williams’ iconic work scripts music not merely as background\, but as an emotional undercurrent: distant\, echoing tunes that linger just beyond the moment\, weaving through thought\, feeling\, and the quiet pull of nostalgia. One of the most renowned American dramas of the 20th century\, this semi-autobiographical masterwork is not just a play–it’s a reverie. \nDue to limited ticket numbers\, both teachers and students may register for the February 3 performance\, but the February 13 performance is reserved for students and family members only. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 13 and older. \nThemes\nAt one point\, Tom has to make the choice to either pay the family’s electric bill\, or use that money to follow his own dream. If you were in Tom’s position\, what beliefs or teachings would influence your decision? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options.

Exemplifying its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance\, this once-in-a-lifetime performance honors the theme American Legacies. \nThe stunning “protest set to banjo” piece (The New York Times) We the People (2024) by Jamar Roberts with music by Rhiannon Giddens; a new work by two-time Bessie Award winner Hope Boykin; and the inimitable Martha Graham classic Appalachian Spring\, with music by Aaron Copland; and “Steps in the Street” from Graham’s Chronicle\, performed by dancers in the University of Minnesota dance program\, round out the repertoire. Shakespeare’s thrilling story of treachery and ambition explores the relationship between power and corruption\, revealing the villainy that can emerge when power is sought.   \nThree things to know \n\nMacbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest and quickest tragedies\, consisting of just over 2\,000 lines. \nThe Guthrie has produced (or co-produced) Macbeth in five past seasons\, most recently in our 2014–2015 Season with The Acting Company. \nThe play is often referred to as “The Scottish Play” because of the superstitious legend that saying the word “Macbeth” in a theater invokes a curse. \n\nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations  \nClick here to view content warnings and age recommendations for this show. \nThemes\nMacbeth’s entire life changes after hearing a prediction from three mysterious people. Had he not heard that prediction\, or if he had not been influenced by it\, his life as well as countless others’ would have been better. What are modern examples of someone’s words influencing other people? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options.
