SUMMARY:Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE Featuring TU Dance
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the fluid eloquence and highly anticipated Northrop onstage debut of Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE. For this 40th anniversary celebration honoring Ronald K. Brown\, one of our generation’s most highly sought-after choreographers\, EVIDENCE will be joined by esteemed local trailblazer TU Dance. This exceptional program will showcase the transformative works of Brown\, whose choreography has been hailed as “richly expressive and irresistibly kinetic” (The New York Times). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening features Where the Light Shines Through\, a soul-stirring piece commissioned by TU Dance in 2017 that tells a story of solidarity and perseverance\, set to traditional music recorded by Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba and other world music artists. Next on the program is Percussion Bitter Sweet: Tender Warriors\, a 2024 commission honoring drummer\, composer\, and activist Max Roach on the occasion of his centennial birthday. The program concludes with Brown’s seminal masterwork Grace (1999)\, his first commission for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, a beloved classic showcasing Brown at the height of his artistic powers.  \nThis unforgettable evening brings to the stage two powerhouse companies\, dancing in three masterful works\, woven together by the rhythms\, traditions\, and cultural narratives of the African diaspora. \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThis performance is recommended for ages 11 and older. \nThemes\n\n\n\n\n\nRonald K. Brown/EVIDENCE is celebrating 40 years of hard work\, and enduring through several eras of change in the world. And what role(s) might their work have played then\, compared to now? \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. SUMMARY:Tiago Rodrigues: By Heart
DESCRIPTION:“Miraculous … a communal act of translation.” —New York Times (Critic’s Pick) \nTiago Rodrigues begins By Heart with an assurance that everything will be “calm and normal.” What he omits is just how un-normal “normal” can be. The acclaimed Portuguese playwright proceeds to invite 10 volunteer audience collaborators on stage to learn a sonnet live\, while weaving in personal stories and literary references. Inspired by his grandmother who must increasingly rely on memory as her vision deteriorates\, the artist engages memory as a tool of resistance. In a time when key words and ideas are being scrubbed from the record\, Rodrigues reminds us that it is we who are the keepers.   \nContent Warnings/Age Recommendations\nThere will be voluntary audience participation. Recommended for ages 14 and older.  \nThemes\nThis show highlights the power of memory in the face of struggle or oppression. What is a memory that helps you to feel better on a hard day?  \nAccessibility\nMany performance venues offer accessibility accommodations such as wheelchair seating\, assistive listening\, sensory ear plugs\, ASL interpretation\, open captioning\, or audio description\, among other options. These accommodations are specific to each event\, and may not be available everywhere. When registering with us\, please let us know what accommodations you need and we will follow up with you!  \nTransportation\nIf you do not have access to a ride\, call Project Success and we can provide transportation for you. Please let us know if you need a ride when you make your reservation. We will need at least 2 days’ notice to set up transportation.
