JUMPING FOR JOY FOR FALL COLLEGE TOURS 2011
This Fall Project SUCCESS invited 9 – 12 grade students from North, Patrick Henry, South, Southwest and Washburn to a variety of in – state colleges and universities. We did workshops at each of the tours, helping the students consider their post – high school options.
We kicked off our in-state tours with the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities! Students had a great time learning about the largest university in Minnesota and Gopher pride! St. Catherine University was next on the list! It was St. Kate’s Fall Visit Day and we enjoyed participating in events happening on campus.
We began the month of November with a tour to St. Catherine’s College for Applied and Continuing Learning. Enrollment there is open to both men and women. The school specializes in occupations within the medical arts field. Students liked learning more about what that field has to offer them. Next we headed to Northfield to tour St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges. There was quite a buzz in the air after walking around the scenic campuses and hearing about the programs offered.
Towards the end of November, students toured Dunwoody College of Technology. We had some very motivated students asking great questions about the career training available there and job placement after graduation. It was a great experience!
All in all we had a very busy, fun and wonderful Fall!
CHICAGO COLLEGE TOUR FALL 2011
Project SUCCESS invited students from North, Patrick Henry, South, Southwest and Washburn to check out the outstanding colleges and universities in the Chicago area. Students were SO excited to visit Chicago area schools that we expanded the trip over two tours and 111 eager young people explored their collegiate options in the Windy City! Along the way we stopped to tour the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Students loved the campus and their homemade ice cream!
In Chicago we checked out:
The University of Chicago
The University of Illinois, Chicago
Columbia College
Illinois Institute of Technology
Roosevelt University
Chicago State
Northwestern University
Depaul University
Loyola University
In the evenings we were able to explore this wonderfully vivacious city! Students meandered in the historic area of Hyde Park, admired the vibrant murals of the Pilsen neighborhood, discovered cool shops and restuarants along Michigan Avenue and cheered on floats at Northwestern's Homecoming in Evanston!
We had a blast learning more about the colleges, the city and each other!
CHICAGO COLLEGE TOUR - March 20-23, 2011
(Spring Break)
Wow, what a great trip! Students representing Patrick Henry, South, Southwest and Washburn High Schools attended this very active and very informative college tour. For the first time this tour included a day trip to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign! We also visited schools in the Chicago area including DePaul University, Columbia College, Northwestern University, Loyola University, University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Exploring Hyde Park, Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park made for memorable evening activities.

THE 2010 FALL COLLEGE TOURS
It has been a busy Fall!
Over MEA weekend in October, Project SUCCESS invited students from North, South, Southwest and Washburn High Schools to Chicago to check out the outstanding colleges and universities in the area. Seventy-one juniors and seniors attended and visited schools such as the University of Chicago, Columbia College, DePaul University, Loyola University, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois - Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, Shimer College and the Illinois Institute of Art. Students were also able to explore some of Chicago’s great neighborhoods that surround the colleges. These neighborhoods are filled with art, cultural significance and a great student presence. On Thursday night students visited Hyde Park, the Pilsen neighborhood (where they were able to visit a student run radio station) and the city of Evanston. Friday night we explored Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park.

November 3rd – 6th, Project SUCCESS took juniors and seniors from North, South, Southwest and Washburn High Schools to look at 5 schools in Iowa. We checked out Iowa State University, Drake University, Grinnell College, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.
On November 5th, Project SUCCESS juniors and seniors toured the University of Wisconsin Madison. This tour included a presentation by an admissions counselor, a student led walking tour, time to explore the very active “State Street”, and a Project SUCCESS workshop on choosing colleges. The day ended with a delicious taste of UW Madison’s campus-made ice cream!
Locally, 9th – 12th grade students from all 5 of our partner high schools have visited Dunwoody College of Technology, St. Catherine University, St. Olaf College and Carleton College.
2009 SPRING BREAK TOURS
During Spring Break 2009, Project SUCCESS took 28 students to visit five colleges in Iowa and 12 students to visit five Wisconsin colleges. The students attending were sophomores, juniors and seniors from North, South and Southwest High Schools.
Our first stop in Iowa was Iowa State University where students spent the whole day visiting the campus and hung out in the Student Union that evening. The next day we visited Drake University and Grinnell College, and then stayed overnight on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City. Our last day we toured the University of Iowa and Cornell College in Mt. Vernon before heading back to Minneapolis.
Our Wisconsin tour started off at UW Stout in Menomonie and moved on to UW Eau Claire. We then travelled to Milwaukee that evening. On the second day we stayed in Milwaukee and visited Marquette University and UW Milwaukee. That afternoon and evening we decided to take ourselves on a walking tour all over the city. We stopped by the art museum, beautifully located on the shore of Lake Michigan, shopped a bit and had dinner at a very secret restaurant called “The Safe House” which was located in an unmarked alley in the downtown area. Our last day was spent at UW La Crosse before heading back home to Minneapolis.
THE 2008 ATLANTA COLLEGE TOUR
In February of 2008, Project SUCCESS took 25 students from North, South and Southwest High Schools to Atlanta, Georgia to look at colleges. Students were able to visit Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, University of Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Emory University. One highlight of the campus tours was when Dr. Robert Franklin, President of Morehouse College, came to speak to our group. An inspirational as well as educational experience, it was an honor for us to be able to spend some time with him. More trip highlights were attending the most amazing Alvin Ailey American Dance Theate Company at the Fox Theater, enjoying the tasty Southern cooking at Mary Mac's Tea Room, and visiting the powerful Martin Luther King Center.

SUCCESS in the Big Apple!
Over Spring Break we took 23 motivated Juniors and Seniors from North, South and Southwest High Schools to New York City to explore the many colleges, universities and trade schools the city and the surrounding area has to offer. Our students had a wide range of interests from fashion design to aerospace technology and almost everyone in the group found a school that suited their needs.
Most of the trip was spent hustling from one school to the next, but we did find time to check out some of the city's great neighborhoods and tourist attractions like Central Park, the Empire State Building, Times Square, China Town, Greenwich Village, Harlem, and we even got to take in a Broadway show!
Some students were able to visit colleges they have always dreamed about and came back with a realistic view of what it would take to attend them. Some students saw schools they had never thought of attending, but now those schools are in their top 5 picks. But every student was able to get a feel for the city and could determine if it was the right choice for them. They all came away with the tools to make informed decisions about their educational future.

The 2005 Los Angeles Area College Tour was a huge success!

Over Spring Break of 2005, Project SUCCESS took 23 awesome students who represented North, South & Southwest High Schools to Los Angeles to check out the colleges and universities in the Southern California area. We had a blast! Before the trip, students researched the colleges in the area and reported back to Project SUCCESS the schools they needed to visit. Thanks to Steve Youlios who donated ground transportation while we were there, we were able to accomodate almost every request! By the end of this trip, students had toured UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount University, Cal Arts, Cal Tech, Azusa Pacific, University of LaVerne, Cal Poly Pomona, Whittier College, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, Cal State LA, LA City College, Cal State Long Beach, Columbia College Hollywood, Occidental, and Pomona, Pitzer, Scripps and Harvey Mudd of the Claremont Colleges. By visiting these campuses, students can now make informed choices regarding their college career.
One of our seniors on the trip, Edythe Smith, was accepted to all 3 of the schools she applied to in the Los Angeles area. She was able to make her final decision after visiting the 3 campuses. Congratulations to Edythe and to all the students who came with us for taking this crucial step in choosing your college!
