From August 10 through August 13, 2009, Project SUCCESS was pleased to work with the Minneapolis Public School District for the second year to conduct 2013 — a four-day camp aimed at helping all 8th graders successfully transition to high school. The entire event was at NO COST to students and families, thanks to the Minneapolis Public Schools. It was a great success, with over 550 students participating throughout the week! The camp was featured in the Star Tribune on August 11.
AUGUST 10
Project SUCCESS hosted a day full of fun and creative workshop activities at the Minneapolis Convention Center, aimed at helping students prepare a “High School Tool Kit,” and answering many of the questions they have about this upcoming year. The day was informative and inspirational as students connected with old friends, made new friends and learned to feel comfortable about the next school year.
AUGUST 11
Day Two continued where Day One left off. This time, students spent the day outside at Washburn High School, learning to work with others and gaining the skills to overcome obstacles they may face in high school. This was a fun day of games, physical activities and team-building. From obstacle courses to challenging puzzles, students of all abilities were able to participate.
AUGUST 12
Day three was designed to welcome students to their new school, let them meet their new principal and some of their new teachers, learn about their school culture and get a head start on the year ahead.
AUGUST 13
Students paddled the Mississippi River in a 24 foot Voyageur canoe and experienced the Twin Cities in a way few people do. Project SUCCESS used the themes of this trip - exploration, adventure and discovery - relating them to the transition from middle to high school.
